A hotel, according to the Oxford dictionary, is an establishment that offers accommodation, meals, and various amenities for both travelers and tourists. While primarily catering to travelers, hotels also serve as a safe and convenient haven for locals seeking temporary lodging or specific services. They provide a home-like environment for individuals exploring a city or needing a place to stay within their own community.

Tolulope, a 42-year-old woman, confined at the female correctional centre in Surulere, Ondo Town, finds herself ensnared by the clutches of the law. Her arrest on that fateful 19th of April 2023 was for the grave offence of possessing Indian hemp, otherwise called ‘igbo’ in local parlance, with the intent to distribute, a path she had unfortunately ventured into. Her story intertwines with a rented hotel room, where the hotel owner was peddling this prohibited substance. Tragically, she was discovered carrying numerous wraps of the substance at the time of her arrest, a desperate measure perhaps, to make ends meet.

On the day of her arraignment, the 25th of May, She pled guilty to the charges of selling Indian hemp. Upon learning of Tolulope’s situation, our approach became clear-cut. We promptly reached out to the her legal representative who confirmed that all prerequisites for bail had been satisfied, leaving only the final step of perfecting the bail. Notably, her case is scheduled for trial in November at the Federal High Court in Ondo State. In collaboration with the inmate’s counsel, WIPSI has taken an active role, diligently coordinating efforts.

We initiated an official visit to the court registrar of the Federal High Court, where we outlined WIPSI’s commitment to representing the inmate pro-bono. Our purpose was to seek avenues for expediting the bail verification process and ensuring a swift resolution for her . We recognize the importance of sharing the complete picture, including the highs and lows, the challenges faced, and the victories achieved. Our dedication to transparency is not merely a promise but a fundamental aspect of our values, ensuring you remain well-informed about the progress and developments surrounding this particular story.
