GOOGLE MEET CONVERSATION ON HOME BASED VIOLENCE IN SUPPORT OF THE UN INITIATIVE AGAINST GENDER BASED VIOLENCE TAGGED #16DAYSOFACTIVISM
The Women in Prison Support Initiative (WIPSI) recently organized a virtual webinar as part of the UN 16 Days of Activism campaign, focusing on the complex landscapes of home-based violence and the judicial perspective. The event, hosted by Dr Yemisi Sosanya, attracted a number of participants who actively engaged in the discussion.
Mr Adelanke Akinrata, represented by Mr Tobi Akindayomi, spoke about navigating the complex landscapes of domestic violence. He emphasized the importance of seeking help and support from organizations such as NGOs and legal aid clinics. He also highlighted the need to address the root causes of violence to break the cycle.
Mrs Olufunke Adegoroye discussed home-based violence from a judicial perspective. She called for legal reforms to better protect victims and hold perpetrators accountable. She also stressed the importance of training judges and legal professionals to handle cases of domestic violence sensitively and effectively.
The webinar provided valuable insights into the complexities of domestic violence and its impact on victims. WIPSI plans to use these lessons to inform future events and initiatives. The organization will continue to advocate for legal reforms that better protect victims of domestic violence and provide them with access to justice. WIPSI will also work to raise awareness about domestic violence and its impact on society as a whole. Collaboration with other organizations working in this area will also be explored to maximize impact.
The event was well-attended, with Madam Catherine Olajumoke, the chairperson of FIDA in Ondo state, in attendance. Her presence was a testament to the importance of the issues being discussed and the impact that WIPSI can have on society.
At the conclusion of the meeting, an appeal was made for voluntary support towards WIPSI’s mission. This support can take the form of becoming a donor or volunteer. Both invited speakers and attendees were appreciated for their participation, and the meeting concluded promptly at 8pm (WAT).
