WIPSI Reflects on the International Human Rights Day Conference: Advancing Justice for Women in Crisis
On December 10, 2024, the Women in Prison Support Initiative (WIPSI) proudly joined the International Human Rights Day Conference as a sponsor and active participant. Hosted by the Nigerian Bar Association Lagos Branch, this impactful event focused on the urgent theme: “Human Rights in Crisis: Addressing the Challenges Facing Nigeria.”
As an organization committed to the prevention, correction, and rehabilitation of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women, this conference was a powerful opportunity to deepen our understanding, connect with stakeholders, and reinvigorate our mission.
Key Highlights from the Conference – The conference featured an array of thought leaders, including Prof. Chioma Kanu Agomo, Senator Shehu Sani, Ahmed Raji SAN, Prof. Oyelowo Oyewo SAN and other distinguished speakers.
Their discussions tackled pressing issues such as systemic injustice, human rights violations, and the urgent need for reform in Nigeria’s justice system.
1. Insights on Systemic Challenges – The speakers painted a sobering picture of Nigeria’s ongoing human rights crises, highlighting challenges such as prison congestion, gender-specific injustices, and inadequate access to justice for marginalized groups, including incarcerated women.
