Following our visit to the Female Custodial Centre, we were honored to make a courtesy visit to the Chief Judge of Lagos State, Honorable Justice Kazeem Alogba. Advancing Access to Justice for Vulnerable Individuals

The Women in Prison Support Initiative (WIPSI) recently took a proactive stance in raising awareness about the rights of individuals in incarceration, particularly women and children. As part of this effort, WIPSI organized a sensitization program at the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Secretariat in Akure on August 23, 2023. The event brought together stakeholders in the legal community to discuss issues related to women and children who are being denied legal aid due to societal prejudices.

WIPSI Stories (Episode 6)

In a shocking turn of events, Julie, driven by an unexplained bitterness, sowed seeds of discord in the community against her own mother. With accusations that her mother sponsored thieves and even possessed firearms. These allegations carried weight because the neighbourhood had been ravaged with a series of armed robberies. It also carried weight because, no one would ever think that a daughter would make such heavy allegations against her mother without there being some truth to it. She rallied the entire neighbourhood, imploring them to attack her mother.

Modupe is currently in jail awaiting trial, with both her children being witnesses to the incident. She has not been before any court yet because the  DPP advice has not been issued. She is however not without legal representation. WIPSI is committed to following up with her case and making sure that the DPP advice is out for a proper trial.

WIPSI STORIES (Episode 1)

Being 18 is something every teenager looks forward to. It’s a time for self-discovery and adventure. Our inmate 101 is currently spending her time of “self-discovery and adventure” in the walls of the female correctional center at Surulere, Ondo town. It’s been quite a time for her in prison. Before prison, she lived with her mother and had a job as a sales person at a petrol station. When we sat down to draw from this well, she told us that her employer had not paid her salary and insisted there was a shortage in the money she was to pay and insisted she pay.
